The County town of Ayr in the heart of the Burns Country has a modern, busy shopping centre, attracting many visitors throughout the year. It is situated 30 miles south of Glasgow and sits on the sea front of the beautiful west coast.
Sitting in the heart of the town centre, among High Street names and busy wine bars, Ayr Business Centre is JHP Training’s main presence in Ayrshire. It forms the base for our professional in-house Tutors, Assessors, Business Development Advisors and our highly efficient administration team, who work hard to support trainees, local businesses and government agencies.
Famous for Kilmarnock FC and Johnnie Walker Whisky, the bustling town of Kilmarnock is rapidly expanding and it is hoped that the new road links will continue to attract new business to the area.
The committed team of staff at JHP Kilmarnock centre pride themselves on their successful Programme Centre, Training for Work and New Deal programmes which help people back to work. Within the centre we provide the resources, skills, qualifications and confidence to get people back into employment.
From over 130 short-listed nominees for JHP's National Learner awards, there were a number of winners, but none more deserving than Martha Fletcher of JHP Ayr. Martha, who is 18 and comes from Springside, came second in the competition for the Scotland region, becoming the proud winner of £250 of Arcadia Group vouchers.
Initially approaching JHP Training as a 16 year old Skillseeker, Martha was placed with a catering equipment firm as an Office Junior. Achieving a Level 2 SVQ in Administration, she quickly moved on to a Modern Apprenticeship in Customer Service.
Martha's confidence in the workplace grew as she progressed with her qualifications and her work supervisor was so impressed that she requested JHP Training find them another Skillseeker resembling "A Martha clone!". Her JHP Assessor was similarly impressed with her performance and attitude and decided to nominate her for the award. Martha is positive about her future and said:
"The qualifications I achieved and winning the JHP National Learner of the Year award have increased my career prospects as they will both look great on my CV!"
Good luck for the future Martha.
Triple Perspective on Training SuccessJHP Trainee Gillian McBride began working for designer outlet Original Shoe Menswear as a Skillseeker on Placement, but the Ayr-based learner has progressed through full-time sales assistant to a new position as supervisor. Here's the success story from three very interesting angles:
"I started Original Shoe on a placement with JHP Training. After I completed my course and achieved my SVQ in retail I was taken on as full time sales assistant/cashier. I have now been promoted to supervisor and am working really hard. The training has made me more confident in dealing with customers and I really felt it has helped me get the supervisor job."
(David began at Original Shoe on placement with JHP in 1993. Following several promotions he reached assistant Manager in 1997, and in 2000 was promoted to Branch manager, a fantastic example himself of how Skillseekers can work.)
"Gill has worked in the company for 4 years, starting off part-time after completing her placement with JHP. She has worked her way up from sales/cashier to supervisor in our new menswear store in the High Street in Ayr with in-store training and, of course, JHP. I would highly recommend this route to any young person as I myself started off as a JHP trainee."
"Gillian was an excellent trainee, totally committed to the Modern Apprenticeship programme, after completing her initial placement in a fast-paced work environment. She was always enthusiastic and completed all work on target, so it therefore comes as no surprise that she has been promoted within her company. She is an excellent example of how the Skillseeker programme can help further careers and the value employers place on vocational qualifications. Well done Gillian!"
