What's New at Barrow

Prepare for the future with JHP Training

With exam results day looming JHP Training Barrow are holding an Open Day on Tuesday 19th August from 2pm to 6pm to showcase to learners, their parents and employers the vocational training routes that are open to them.

Making the right choice after leaving school can be difficult and young people are often unsure on what the right decision for them is. Many are told that college, followed by university is the ‘sensible’ choice providing a solid base from which to build a career.

JHP Barrow believes that school leavers should be armed with information on all of the options available to them in order that they can make an informed decision regarding their future.

For more details on the JHP Training Barrow Open Day please contact Joe Reynolds or Paula Warriner, tel: 01229 813 202.

JHP Barrow Celebrates Young Citizen of the Year Success

JHP Barrow Apprentices have received Young Citizen of the Year awards, sponsored by the Furness Community Achievement Awards Ceremony. Scott Quinn and Abigail Bonner were both placed at Cumbria Constabulary in Barrow for twelve months, during which they completed a Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship.

They were nominated for the Young Citizen award by Inspector Geoff Steele, their personal mentor and supervisor for the twelve month Pathways to Employment programme, which was sponsored by Cumbria County Council (COPS). Both Scott and Abigail have gained employment at the police station following their Apprenticeship and are now hoping to progress onto Level 3 qualifications.

JHP Barrow has placed a further five candidates on to the County Council Pathways programme at Barrow and Kendal police station and are hoping that the success will continue.

JHP Barrow - New Premises at College HouseJHP Barrow On The Move

As from 08 May 2007, JHP Training in Barrow in Furness will be in new offices on the 2nd Floor of College House in Howard Street. The move is coming at a very exciting time for us and will mean that both JHP Training and JHP Cumbria Childcare will be together under one roof.

Joe Reynolds, Regional Manager for JHP Training said:

"This is an important time for work based learning and training, especially since the publication in December 2006 of the long awaited Leitch report, in which Lord Sandy Leitch examined the UK’s long term skills need. In publishing the report he stated that in the 21st century, our natural resource is our people – and that skills are the key to unlocking their potential."

He also stated that the “prize” for the country will be enormous – higher productivity, the creation of wealth and social justice.

The need for access to training provision in order to provide that skilled workforce is a fact that is recognised by JHP Training and this move is a great opportunity for the centre in Barrow to ensure that we continue to offer the highest quality provision to individuals and relevant training solutions for local employers.”

LSC Apprentice of the Year Award

At JHP Training Barrow, we have recently shared in the success of one of our Apprentices at the Excellence in Cumbria Awards. Philippa Hutt ,19, from Levens was announced as the Apprentice of the Year at the prestigious awards ceremony held at the Castle Green Hotel on Thursday 29 March 2007.

JHP Barrow Apprentice Philipa Hutt Receiving Her Apprentice Of The Year Award The awards are run by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to highlight the importance of learning – to individuals and employers, to communities, and in turn to the future of the county.

Philippa was working at Bibby Distribution Ltd, Crooklands near Kendal where, with the help of her employer and JHP Training Barrow, she gained her Apprenticeship in Business Administration. Philippa was nominated for the South East Apprentice of the Year regional award by her assessor Julie Casson because, until she moved to Levens not only was Philippa travelling upwards of 100 miles a day to work but once in Levens was still working full time, helping her partner to establish his own business and also making regular trips to Reading to see her mother who is undergoing long term treatment in hospital.

Philippa was determined that even with these constraints on her time she was still going to achieve her Apprenticeship, which she did, three months ahead of schedule.

Having won the regional award for the Apprentice of the Year Philippa was automatically put forward for the county award, but unfortunately was unable to attend the awards ceremony in person, as she was in Reading with her mother. On hearing that she had won the Apprentice of the Year for the county, Philippa said she was “shocked and amazed” and that “I rang my manager at Bibbys, because I thought that when JHP told me I had won it was all a wind up, even my mum was jumping up and down, she was really pleased”.

Julie Casson who had been Philippa’s assessor, said that she hoped Philippa would continue with her learning and progress to a Level 3 Apprenticeship. Julie also said “I am extremely proud of Philippa and her achievements and as she is such a motivated and determined individual she will be a success at whatever she chooses to do and I wish all the very best for the future”.

Andy White, the Depot Manager from Bibby Distribution is also extremely proud of Philippa’s achievements, and said “I wish her all the best for the future and would like to thank Julie and JHP Training for all of their help and support in finding me such a competent Apprentice”.

JHP Training and Jobcentre Plus work together to provide jobseeker training for JMA clients

Helping Jobseekers Succeed in Employment

JHP Training Barrow has recently started delivering Jobseeker Mandatory Activity (JMA) on behalf of Jobcentre Plus.

The Jobseeker Mandatory Activity programme has been running for almost four months and helps people referred by Jobcentre Plus to prepare for interviews, apply for jobs and most importantly, find work.

So far, the response to JMA has been very positive and staff working on the programme have received fantastic feedback from clients as well as from Jobcentre Plus.

A positive outcome of the programme can be seen in the experience of Mark Allen, who attended the short course back in May. Mark had been invited to an interview with a local employer but was worried about struggling in the interview situation. Mark was referred to JHP Training and following practice of his interview skills on the JMA course went on to secure a job.

So far the success rate for customers gaining employment through JMA has been high and the course is proving to be a real success for motivating jobseekers in Cumbria.

Feedback from Jobcentre Plus clients:

“The Course was thoroughly useful.”
“The Programme was not what I expected. It was very informative and useful.”
“I did not think the course could offer me anything but it has actually opened up more avenues and possibilities for me than I ever expected.”

Barrow maintains annual win!
