What's New In JHP Carlisle

JHP Carlisle Happy to be "Moving Forward"

For the past two years JHP Carlisle has successfully run Jobseeker Mandatory Activity (JMA) a Jobcentreplus pilot achieving good results and excellent feedback from customers and Jobcentreplus alike.

The pilot ended in March and Carlisle Jobcentre were disappointed that the course could not be extended. Although it was a mandatory course, the majority of customers thoroughly enjoyed the experience and 25% gained employment within thirteen weeks.

JHP Carlisle and Jobcentreplus discussed the possibility of running a local course similar to JMA and approached Carlisle City Council for help. Following a presentation to the council the Renaissance Department agreed to fund an eight week trial of a new course is called 'Moving Forward'. The programme ties in nicely with a city council objective to help local people on incapacity benefit (although the course is open to anyone).

'Moving Forward' is a three day programme with follow up support sessions from JHP Carlisle, the council and Jobcentreplus. It is designed to motivate customers and give them confidence by covering job search skills, promoting learning opportunities and helping customers to identify their personal barriers to employment. Customers produce a personal action plan which helps them to overcome problems and moves them closer to their goal of gaining employment or training.

JHP Carlisle are three weeks into the trial and feedback has been superb.

Colleagues Celebrate NVQ Success

JHP Carlisle is celebrating as eleven learners at James Walker, a Cockermouth engineering firm, have completed NVQs at Level 3 in Business Administration and Customer Service.

Every employee that took part in the voluntary training programme passed and gained valuable new skills, apart from one who left the firm before completing hte course.

Megan Smith, 19, of Harriston, Aspatria, has worked for James Walker for two years as a product stream rep and said:

"I have enjoyed the course. I finished in January and was one of the fastest in the country to get through".

James Walker, which employs 380 people at its Gore Road factory, recently celebrated its 125th anniversary and was last year named as Cumbria's apprentice employer of the year.

Learn New Skills and Plan for Tomorrow with e2e

JHP Carlisle has recently started to deliver a programme known as e2e (meaning Entry to Employment) which is designed for 16 to 19 year olds that want to prepare for getting jobs.

From premises in Broadacre House, we have an entire floor dedicated to learners on our e2e programme. e2e is designed to help young people overcome the difficult barriers they face in their day-to day lives that might prevent them from finding employment. Through a mixture of group work and one-to-one support, learners can gain valuable skills which will help them find work and keep it.

If you want to know more, check out the e2e section of this site. Click here.

Excellence in Carlisle

JHP Carlisle has had lots to celebrate recently. It’s had two area winners in the LSC Excellence in Cumbria Awards, one of whom also went on to win the Connexions Youth Progress Award. Here are their stories:

Luke Marwood for North Cumbria

Luke Marwood for North Cumbria

Luke had left school with no qualifications because of suffering health problems. He wanted to get himself back on track and so began on the Entry to Employment programme. Luke approached his time on the programme positively and not long after moved on to a placement with Cumbria County Council and went on to do an Apprenticeship in Administration. Not settled with his Administration qualification, Luke has now started an ITQ – which is an IT based qualification.

And as if one award wasn’t enough for Luke, to top it all off, he also won the biggest prize, the Connexions Cumbria Youth Progress Award – very well done!

Lisa Thompson for West Cumbria

Lisa Thompson for West Cumbria

When she was at infant school Lisa was found to be dyslexic and feared that as a result she might find it hard to gain employment later in life. Following school, Lisa joined JHP Carlisle as a learner and was given a placement as receptionist at the JHP Carlisle premises. She has since completed an Apprenticeship in Business Administration with us as well as Key Skills in Application of Number level 1 and 2, Communication 2 and IT 2. She has even completed an Apprenticeship in Customer Service…phew!

Well done to the both of you – your awards are very much deserved!

Training Pays Off in Prize Winning Battle

Vocational training has more than paid off for an employee from Penrith. Marie Wallace, 24, who works for Phoenix Healthcare Distribution Limited has been recognised as ‘Learner of the Year’ in JHP’s national training awards, walking away with a prize worth £3000!

Marie, aged 24, began a programme of work based learning involving her employer and JHP Training Carlisle, in 2000. She has since gone from strength to strength achieving vocational qualifications in each job she has had with the company, including Warehousing, Business Administration and Customer Service.

Marie, who was one of four regional finalists in the JHP Training ‘National Learner Awards’, battled it out for the top prize at an event held at JHP Training’s Head Office in Coventry. The Awards were launched to recognise the personal achievements of vocational trainees from across the UK, and Marie’s efforts paid dividends as she walked away with a £2000 holiday voucher, a digital camera, clothes vouchers, spending money, a suitcase and toiletries.

Marie is still undecided where she will go on holiday, but her plans for the future are already decided! She is now training to become an Assessor herself, which will enable her to deliver NVQs and Apprenticeships to her colleagues at Phoenix.
