What's New In JHP Coventry

New Opportunities for Jobcentre Plus Customers

JHP Coventry is pleased to announce that it has recently won a contract to provide basic and employability skills training to Jobcentre Plus customers, brought about following a new government initiative to help people get back to work.

The programme provides encouragement and support to all adults looking to improve their literacy, language and numeracy skills in order to find employment and JHP Coventry's friendly staff are eager to welcome newcomers to the programme and help them achieve their employment ambitions.

The employability award is based on the skills, behaviours and attitudes that employers want to see in a new recruit and as such the programme is personalised to each Jobcentre Plus customer to ensure a high success rate. During the programme, learners will take part in various activities including:

  • Activities to enhance their employability skills
  • Opportunities to update their knowledge and understanding of the local job market
  • Opportunities to update their job search skills, to take part in job interviews and spend trial placements with local employers
  • Literacy, language and numeracy programmes personalised to their individual needs
  • Progress reports every three weeks to ensure they are getting the most from the programme

All of the training offered by JHP Coventry is nationally recognised and will put learners in a better position to find a job they enjoy.

A Beautiful Lesson in Customer Service

Rivaaj Hair and Beauty teams up with JHP Training for Customer Service qualifications JHP Coventry celebrates a successful partnership this month thanks to the delivery of Customer Service qualifications to staff at an Asian Hair and Beauty salon.

Rivaaj, which prides itself on client satisfaction, has been taking lessons in customer service from JHP Training to help staff at the salon gain important work-based qualifications to help improve their job related skills.

Initially four employees were signed up to undertake qualifications in Customer Service at Level 2, and since JHP’s Trainer Assessor Lisa Hunter has been teaching the qualification, a further six employees have started NVQs as well! Manager Sandy Sembi is over the moon and said:

“Since starting the qualification the girls in the salon are now more motivated. They have taken what they’ve learned from their qualification and have applied it directly to their jobs, all to the pleasure of our clients. I really hope that our partnership with JHP Training continues as it has really worked for Rivaaj.”

One employee who began at Rivaaj last December and has recently started her training is employee Paveran Preet Sandhu, aged 23. She is working towards an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3,

“I have just started my qualification and I can already see how much it will help me with my job. The customers seem pleased with the changes it is making and it will definitely improve the service the shop offers. I’m really keen to continue learning, so once I finish this qualification I’d really like to do another.”

Dreams Come True

JHP Training’s Chairman, Hugh Pitman, presents BET learner Christine Smith with her certificate An adult learner has finally realised her dream thanks to the support of JHP Coventry.

Christine Smith joined JHP on a Basic Employability Training programme following a period of fifteen years spent caring for her mother. As part of the programme Christine was placed with Global Care for three months during which time she found she had a real passion for the field but no qualifications; being out of the work environment for such a long time had also had a negative effect on her confidence. Never the less Christine applied for a number of care jobs in the Coventry area, but experienced setbacks when her applications were unsuccessful.

Determined to help her succeed Christine’s tutor, Simon Fassam encouraged her to join job search sessions and she also passed her literacy exam. All the hard work paid off and Christine has now secured a full time job as a care assistant and is going to be put through full time training.

Christine has come an extremely long way since joining JHP and through hard work and determination has achieved her dream. Well done and good luck for the future.

Lisa's a Winner at Coventry

Lisa Daniels Award winner Coventry 0506 JHP Training Coventry nominated Apprentice Lisa Daniels, an employee at Pulse Recruitment, for the 2006 Training Excellence Awards and her nomination paid off!

Lisa, who made the short list with another four people in her category, was commended for the strength of her nomination and successfully made it through to the finals of the Apprentice of the Year category for Coventry and Warwickshire.

Unfortunately Lisa was ‘pipped at the post’ to first prize, but it wasn’t too much of a disappointment she still got to attend the ceremony and receive her £100 reward.

Lisa has worked hard to gain qualifications and has completed two Apprenticeships in Customer Service and Business Administration and is currently doing a Customer Service Advanced Apprenticeship which she aims to complete very soon.

Well done Lisa, we wish you the best of success.

JHP Training and Coventry Express Services working together

JHP Coventry has teamed up with Coventry Express Services to develop skills in individuals training for Warehousing and Forklift Truck qualifications. Having operated in the city for 14 years, CES are impressed with a blossoming relationship which benefits both parties, but most significantly provides support and experience to people who wish to improve their prospects of employment. Lee Holligan, Warehouse Manager at CES said:

“The working relationship that has developed between JHP and ourselves is excellent. We are able to work together to the mutual benefit of the Company and the learners.”

Thus far, the relationship has yielded great success, with three people being taken on in full-time employment. Patrick Stackhouse, a Warehouse Forklift Truck Driver, is one of those successful candidates. He had been out of work for some time before attending a vocational programme at JHP, receiving support with his dyslexia and given the opportunity to gain some work experience and update his skills with Coventry Express Services. Staff at CES were so impressed with his commitment and dedication that when a position at CES became available, he was offered a full-time job.

Through paying attention to learners’ needs and by providing valuable experience with companies like CES, JHP can help many people back into full-time employment. Patrick had this to say about his experience.

“It’s great having a full-time, permanent job and it is all thanks to CES and the support I have had from JHP Training.”
