What's New at JHP Gloucester - JHP Employability

Excellent Turn Out for VQ Day Awards

Zehra Zaidi speaks to JHP Gloucester Young ApprenticesAn Awards evening held to celebrate the achievements of JHP Gloucester’s Young Apprentices nearly spilled out of the building as over 70 learners, parents, local employers and teachers arrived to join the celebrations, which included drinks, nibbles and a special Young Apprentice cake to mark the occasion!

Held as part of the second annual VQ Day, the evening was hosted by Regional Manager Denise Northedge, who was delighted to have special guests Zehra Zaidi (former MEP candidate for the South West) and Amanda Gaunt (parent) speak as part of the evening. Other guests included Kath Sutlow from Barnwood Park School and Ewan Saunders from Gloucestershire County Council.

Denise said
“I am incredibly proud of the hard work these young people have put into their programme, they have spent the best part of a year in an adult working environment and their maturity and dedication has been outstanding”.

Amanda, whose son Tom was one of the recipient’s of the Young Apprentice Certificate, spoke eloquently of what the opportunity has meant for them, saying
“The business administration course he followed gave him practical skills relevant to the workplace including Health and Safety training and how to write a CV – all things he recognised would be useful to him. It made a difference to him - I could see him maturing visibly as he was welcomed into UFS (employer where Tom completed his placement) - he was given his own desk and the staff fully involved him in their social activities. He learnt to manage his own time and he didn’t want to let them or himself down.”

Amanda then gave special thanks to Liz Stickland, Tom’s mentor, ending with “Thank you JHP Training for helping Tom and me to reach this point in our lives, where we can stand holding our heads high and look forward confidently to the future.”

In total, 26 young people achieved full certificates after completing their two year Young Apprentice programme. JHP Gloucester worked closely with six local schools and eighteen local companies to give learners a taste of the world of work alongside completing vocational qualifications equivalent to 4.5 GCSE’s. In today’s jobs market, this can only give these students a real advantage as they complete their education and move into the workplace.

Dave Clark - e2e Learner

e2e Learner Lands 'Plumb' Job

The Foundation Learning Team at JHP Training in Gloucester is celebrating the success of an Entry to Employment learner who has beaten the odds to achieve a plumbing placement with Severn Vale Housing.

David Clarke, who joined the E2e programme in November working towards his Employment Skills qualification, first gained work experience with the local housing association as part of his course. He then went on to apply for a Level 2 apprenticeship against 118 other applicants – and has won the place!

David, aged 18, was short-listed among the final 13 applicants, then got down to the final two. After a nail-biting day-and-a-half of waiting, David was given the fantastic news that he had been chosen to undertake the apprenticeship.

David said, “I am really pleased to have got this apprenticeship. Plumbing is what I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve loved my placement with Severn Vale and now knowing that it is going to carry on and lead into employment with training is just brilliant! I can’t believe that I’ve been chosen out of so many other applicants, I’m so pleased!”

Entry to Employment tutor Deborah Marshall said, “The fact that David got the placement based on the strength of his interview is the most pleasing. He put in so much preparation, hard work and dedication, and this really came across in his confident approach. I am thrilled for David, he’s come so far and everyone at JHP wishes him every success for the future.”

David will now move on to Gloucestershire College to do a Plumbing apprenticeship at Level 2 alongside his employment at Severn Vale Housing.

Apprenticeships – the road to success!

Emma PeeryGemma Perry, aged 17, is a former Entry to Employment (e2e) learner who came to JHP Gloucester for help with personal social development issues, building her confidence and helping her gain skills to move into the workplace. During her time on programme, she worked towards her Key Skills qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy and studied child care.

Gemma said, “Everyone at JHP Gloucester was really friendly and I got lots of help particularly with my Basic Skills. Part of my course includes work experience. I attended a playgroup in Cheltenham for three days per week where I gained hands-on experience with children. Now I'm working for a children’s day nursery in Cheltenham and I have a place at Gloucestershire College from September, where I will be studying Level 2 in Early Years Care. I would not be where I am today without the help from everyone at JHP Glouester.”

Gemma’s child care tutor, Adelle Brinkworth, said, “When Gemma came to us, she really did have a lot of needs that we had to support her in. She needed intense one-to-one support in her studies, as well as praise to boost her confidence and help develop her maturity. Over her time with JHP Gloucester, I saw her transform from a shy young girl into a dedicated, hardworking capable young woman who overcame a lot of barriers through her sheer dedication to succeed. We’re all tremendously proud of how far she has come.”

Ceri McQueen, another former e2e learner, is now employed by Archant Life, one of the largest national publishing companies. She said, “I joined JHP Gloucester in January  where I learned employment skills. I was given the opportunity through my Employment Support Officer Richard Maple, to attend an interview at Archant Life. I successfully got the job and through JHP Gloucester I completed my NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration. Since being at Archant Life I have been promoted twice and now I am working as Marketing Assistant. None of these opportunities would be available if it wasn’t for JHP Gloucester providing the first step.”
