What's New at JHP Gloucester

Peter Buxton with JHP LearnersGloucester Hero “Bucko” Joins JHP Learners To Celebrate National VQ Day

One of Kingsholm’s finest, Peter Buxton, turned out to help learners celebrate their success as part of the first ever VQ Day at JHP Gloucester. The former skipper of the rugby team was among a wealth of special guests who attended the day’s events, which were part of nationwide celebrations held to mark the achievements of learners who have completed vocational qualifications.

Peter presented certificates to more than 30 JHP Gloucester learners in an afternoon awards ceremony. Others who joined in the festivities were representatives from the Army, Gloucestershire College, Connexions, Gloucestershire Youth, the Learning and Skills Council and Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, who held a Careers Fair to highlight the prospects and opportunities available to people who want to follow a vocational learning route.

Opening the event, JHP Gloucester Business Centre manager Karen Probyn said, “Every year the successes of GCSE and A-level students are nationally recognised and celebrated but, until today, the achievements of those who have chosen to follow a vocational learning path have gone unsung. The aim of National VQ Day is to change that and JHP Training is proud to join in with those celebrations.”

The day also included a series of activities for learners on JHP Gloucester’s Entry to Employment (e2e) course. One learner said, “The whole day has been such good fun. My friends are all talking about getting their A-Level results in a few weeks and I thought I would be really left out, but collecting my certificate today has made me so proud of everything I have achieved and I’ve got a lot of useful information about where I can go when I leave JHP Training.”

Event co-ordinator Denise Northedge added, “Our first ever VQ Day could not have gone better. The turn out and support from JHP Gloucester’s partnership organisations and all of our guests has been fantastic; the staff and learners have loved the day and we’re already looking forward to next year. Special thanks must also go to Raging Bull Promotions for providing us with our guest of honour, Peter Buxton. Having a local hero recognising their achievements was a real boost for the learners!”

Apprenticeships – the road to success!

Emma PeeryGemma Perry, aged 17, is a former Entry to Employment (e2e) learner who came to JHP Gloucester for help with personal social development issues, building her confidence and helping her gain skills to move into the workplace. During her time on programme, she worked towards her Key Skills qualifications in Literacy and Numeracy and studied child care.

Gemma said, “Everyone at JHP Gloucester was really friendly and I got lots of help particularly with my Basic Skills. Part of my course includes work experience. I attended a playgroup in Cheltenham for three days per week where I gained hands-on experience with children. Now I'm working for a children’s day nursery in Cheltenham and I have a place at Gloucestershire College from September, where I will be studying Level 2 in Early Years Care. I would not be where I am today without the help from everyone at JHP Glouester.”

Gemma’s child care tutor, Adelle Brinkworth, said, “When Gemma came to us, she really did have a lot of needs that we had to support her in. She needed intense one-to-one support in her studies, as well as praise to boost her confidence and help develop her maturity. Over her time with JHP Gloucester, I saw her transform from a shy young girl into a dedicated, hardworking capable young woman who overcame a lot of barriers through her sheer dedication to succeed. We’re all tremendously proud of how far she has come.”

Ceri McQueen, another former e2e learner, is now employed by Archant Life, one of the largest national publishing companies. She said, “I joined JHP Gloucester in January 2007 where I learned employment skills. I was given the opportunity through my Employment Support Officer Richard Maple, to attend an interview at Archant Life. I successfully got the job and through JHP Gloucester I completed my NVQ Level 2 in Business and Administration. Since being at Archant Life I have been promoted twice and now I am working as Marketing Assistant. None of these opportunities would be available if it wasn’t for JHP Gloucester providing the first step.”

JHP Gloucestershire's Young Apprentices Celebrate Exam Success!

Jim Chambers with the Young Apprentices

A presentation ceremony to mark the achievements of Young Apprentices from JHP Gloucestershire has been hailed “a tremendous success” by JHP Training's new CEO, Jim Chambers.

The event was attended by guests including Parmjit Dhanda, Labour MP for Gloucester and Martin Wallace of Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company, as well as parents and local business mentors. It was held to recognise the completion of the Young Apprentice's Technical Certificate exams, IOSH Working Safely qualifications and the High Achiever awards which are presented every term.

The Young Apprentices who are aged 14 -15 and come from schools throughout the county, have been studying for their Retail or Business and Administration Apprenticeships with JHP Training since September. They will shortly progress to the next stage of their course, a one-day-a-week work placement.

Speaking at the event, which was opened by Young Apprentice Co-ordinator Dee Northedge, Mr Chambers said he was proud to be involved in what was his first official awards ceremony since stepping into his new role.

He continued, “It is just uplifting to see the enthusiasm of these young learners, who have done so well to achieve this qualification. I hope their success will continue to grow.”

Ryan Gardner, a Retail Young Apprentice, shared his excitement at starting his work experience with Woolworths soon. He said, “I have gained a lot of experience at JHP Training and I am really looking forward to beginning my placement and gaining even more skills.”

Business and Administration Young Apprentice, Georgina Lauder, added, “I think today has gone really well. It’s been a great success and has really shown how much the course has meant to everyone involved. All our hard work has paid off!”

Co-ordinator Dee Northedge said, “I am incredibly proud of everything the Young Apprentice’s have achieved so far. It is a true testament to their enthusiasm and dedication to their training, that they have achieved such outstanding results in a relatively short space of time.

The learners will eventually spend two days a week in work placement, in order to successfully complete their Apprenticeship and will emerge equipped with the skills to become part of Gloucester’s redevelopment workforce of the future.
