Angelika Leslie - Management NVQ to Departmental Manager job

German-born Angelika Leslie left school at the age of 16 but her educational experience didn’t end there. 25 years later, the 41-year-old has an array of qualifications and experience behind her. Angelika completed a three-year apprenticeship in Retail Fashion after leaving school, and worked in a department store. During this time she trained as a Beautician in her late 20’s and eventually ran her own organic cosmetics and gift company. Sounds clinical yet each one has been a step forward in her life, not backwards, according to Angelika.

Despite gaining years of experience within the retail sector in her home country, Angelika wanted to obtain a British qualification that would be more recognisable and gain a wider knowledge of management to help her personal career development.

With the support of her employer, Hoopers, Angelika worked with JHP Training in Carlisle to complete a Management NVQ in 2008. The qualifications enabled her to gain an in-depth insight into the theoretical side of management, which she combined with the practical experience she has gained over the years. Whilst undertaking her NVQ Angelika was promoted to Department Manager and is responsible for the overall running of the store’s Accessories Department.

Angelika said: “My grandmother always used to tell me what you learn will never be lost because it will always help you in life. It isn’t all about getting qualifications for work, it is about helping you in all parts of your life too including your social life, personal skills.”

As a result of gaining several qualifications throughout her life, Angelika herself recognised that this experience has changed her life for the better.  She also insists that you are never too old to learn:

“You may think you can’t go into learning once you get to a certain age but you must pursue it and prove that you are capable. Age is not a problem.”
