Melissa Wright - Get Ready for Work Programme Leading to Full-Time Employment

Like many school leavers, Melissa Wright wanted to start earning as soon as she left school at 16.  She initially started working as a hairdresser but decided that this wasn’t for her and began looking for a career change. After a visit to Careers Scotland, Melissa was given an option she was not aware she had; to apply for a place on the Get Ready for Work course at JHP Employability. Once she started this course, she decided that she wanted to pursue an office-based career and when offered an administrative position that further expanded her options and when offered a work placement at local business Macfie’s which she eagerly accepted.

After a successful placement at Macfie's, Melissa was offered a full-time position with the opportunity to complete an SVQ in Business Administration.  The role involved Melissa performing a wide scope of tasks within the office and gave her the opportunity to broaden her skill-set within a short space of time, as well as gaining an excellent insight into the workings of the business – all of which was underpinned by her vocational qualification.

On a glamorous note, her new role also gave Melissa the opportunity to attend formal Property Manager’s dinners, helping to develop her networking skills as well as her confidence in dealing with people at different levels.  Melissa was also offered the opportunity to learn to drive, fully expensed by her new employers as a perk to the job!

Melissa's manager is delighted with her progress and quotes, "Melissa has proved herself a valuable member of a small team in Macfie's. She has quickly mastered a wide variety of office tasks and will be shortly progressing to more specialized work assisting the Property Managers".
