Shawn Lawson - Youth Foundation Programme Progressing to Warehousing and Storage Apprenticeship
When Shaun came to JHP Employability in Leeds he had just become
a father at 18 and was determined to secure employment and provide
for his family. Unfortunately, Shaun’s troubled past meant he faced
barriers to employment but was determined to overcome these.
As Shaun had left school with no qualifications, he believed that
the opportunities available to him were limited but joining a Youth
Foundation Programme
enabled him to complete his Adult Literacy Level 1 qualifications.
His dedication to this opened doors for him and he secured a
placement with Mainline Bearings. Although this placement got off to
a shaky start, Shaun was supported by his tutors and his
employer to continue. This support allowed Shaun to re-focus on his
goals and his subsequent hard work and dedication meant that seven
weeks into his placement, he was offered the opportunity to complete
a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Distribution and Warehousing.
Shaun had never thought this was possible because of his lack of
qualifications and experience but is now confident he will be able
to provide for his family. Vincent Carroll from Mainline Bearings is
also very positive about the benefits of the Youth Foundation
Programme and commented:
“We had no hesitation in taking Shaun on as we were looking to add
to our busy warehouse team. Having taken on another apprentices,
Jordan, two years ago, who is now employed full-time, we felt that
this was the most effective way to grow our staff in line with our
business.
Shaun has only been with us a few weeks, but is already a key member
of the team with key responsibilities and has demonstrated a mature
attitude to all aspects of his working day.
With hands-on training throughout the year including fork-life
training, and an NVQ at the end, we expect if all goes well that his
position will also become permanent.”
