The Bigger Picture
An explanation of Modern Apprenticeships and SVQs
Modern Apprenticeships are a method of training which combine the hands-on experience of employment with the qualifications you achieve by studying. They are made up of a Framework of two different elements - the SVQ and Core Skills, and each focuses on different aspects of your development, both practical and theoretical. Together they make a perfectly balanced programme of training, designed to help you become the best you can be.
Modern Apprenticeships are available to 16-19 year olds who have not been through higher education and that are employed over 16 hours per week. For over 20s there may be the chance of gaining vocational qualifications by undertaking the SVQ aspect of a Modern Apprenticeship. So what is a Modern Apprenticeship?
A Modern Apprenticeship is made up of two elements. The elements are: A Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) and Core Skills.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
As the most practical aspect of a Modern Apprenticeship, the SVQ's main aim is to assess your knowledge and experience within your chosen vocational area. You'll be achieving a nationally recognised qualification through completing a series of units, each demonstrating that you've got what it takes to succeed in a different area of your job role.
SVQs are assessed in the workplace by JHP Assessors, who make regular workplace visits in order to monitor your progress. Rest assured, you'll receive a high level of support and guidance throughout your qualification - gaining confidence as your expertise grows.
Core Skills
Core Skills are skills that you use all of the time, whatever your job role. Common to all Modern Apprenticeships, they're transferable to any position you'll work in and are essential in everyday life.
There are five Core Skills: Communication, Working With Others, Problem Solving, Numeracy and Information Technology. Depending on your past experience and abilities you may not have to take all of these Core Skills as part of your Modern Apprenticeship.
Taking into consideration your job role and past experience, JHP Training will help you decide which training programme is the right one for you. In addition, our Assessors will be on hand to provide advice and guidance to both you and your employer throughout your time with us.
