JHP Training in Stirling has completed their
first Modern Apprenticeship in Warehousing with a female learner.
Warehousing is mainly a male dominated industry, however Anne Bow in
Argos successfully completed her MA.
Anne found her SVQ good fun, informative and liked the ongoing communication that ENVQ offered. Currently working in Argos Linlithgow, Anne completed her MA despite moving stores half way through. Anne intends to keep learning using our on line learning courses with Learn Direct Scotland and has already completed some of these so far.
Anne completed her MA with assessor Tom Foggo and Greig Renwick.
Learners on JHP Alloa's Get Ready for Work programme were lucky enough to spend an entire day with the Army recently. The learners visited Redford and Dreghorn barracks and were put through their paces during a variety of challenges throughout the day including team-building exercises, assault courses, laser gun competitions, paintballing and endurance tests. The soldiers showed learners their kit and equipment including smoke grenades, survival kits and even an AK47 rifle!
Thomas Robinson, tutor at JHP Alloa led the team and commented ‘all the learners and myself had a great time and enjoyed the programme, even when we were being shouted orders by the soldiers! The learners and myself would like to thank the army for the day and look forward to more events in the future’
A great day out building confidence and skills for all involved.
At first glance, John did not seem to be the most likely JHP success story. We first saw him, aged 16, when a family member brought him to the Centre, wanting to encourage him to 'Find something useful to do - not just sitting around the house playing computer games and relying on family hand-outs.'
John reluctantly agreed to join the Getting Ready for Work course, but was a 'difficult' teenager to work with at first. However, he began to settle down, and as he did so his timekeeping, attendance and self motivation began to improve. He gained an ECDL Certificate, made new friends of all ages and became a likeable, pleasant, polite and friendly young man.
We lost touch with John after he left JHP, but was recently spotted, by a member of staff, working in a fast food outlet. However, it turned out that this was in fact weekend work to support him through the 'Access to University' course he was attending. John hopes to be offered a place in University to become a Social Worker, and ultimately wants to work with disadvantaged young people. We wish him well!
JHP Stirling have just completed a successful retail vocational programme with Falkirk Council. The partnership was formed to give ten individuals the chance to get their start in the retail sector and involved both learners of all ages and from various backgrounds. All participants attended workshops and practical retail training sessions along with hands-on experience from intense work placements. The dedication and commitment of all the learners and staff involved ensured everyone on the programme achieved a permanent position with their placement company.
All of the learners were positive about the programme and their comments reflect this:
"I would let anyone know if they are looking to get into work JHP Training and Falkirk Council are the best people to go to" - Louise Henderson
"The training was very helpful and I learned a lot…..the staff were very good with all of us and got us the placements we wanted" - Benjamin Bryce
JHP Stirling has made great progress in the delivery of retail qualifications and eNVQ with learners in both Tesco Extra in Alloa and the ASDA Falkirk.
At Tesco Extra, learners undertook Modern Apprenticeships if Customer Service, Retail, Distribution and Warehousing and Management – all qualification were delivered by Training Manager Greig Reinwick and Assessor Tom Foggo. The learners all expressed their enjoyment of the training experience and have said that they would definitely recommend the programmes to their colleagues in the future. JHP Stirling will continue this successful partnership with a new group of learners soon and will also introduce eNVQ to the store.
ASDA Falkirk has already embraced eNVQ and have had their first learner complete using the system. Melanie Gilson enjoyed the experience commenting that her Modern Apprenticeship will help her in both current and future job roles and that eNVQ was easy to use. Melanie is looking to continue her development by applying to complete additional vocational units using her ILA account.
Over the past few months, JHP Training in Stirling has begun working in a royal partnership with the Prince’s Trust, resulting in its first achievement.
The Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust leads Scotland in the promotion and support of self-employment and business creation amongst young people.
Alison Hill successfully set up her own business called ‘Haliem’ selling high fashion shoes and accessories thanks to funding from the Prince’s Trust. Now, two years down the line, Alison has used her experience and skills to achieve her SVQ in Management. and found the process very worthwhile, she said:
“The SVQ made me more aware of my own job role and allowed me to make changes and improvements to benefit the business.”
Following this success, JHP Stirling will continue working with the Prince’s Trust to help other emerging leaders and entrepreneurs gain vocational qualifications. Get in touch if you want to know more.
JHP Training Stirling is proud to have been successfully delivering SVQ qualifications at The Falkirk Wheel, providing staff with qualifications in Management, Retail, Customer Service and Hospitality.
The Falkirk Wheel is the UK’s largest canal restoration project and was developed by British Waterways to reconnect the Union Canal with the Forth & Clyde Canal, joining the east and west coast for boat access. JHP Stirling is pleased to be a part of the project’s success by providing staff training and qualifications.
JHP Learner Angela Bell has been named regional learner of the year for Scotland. The 27-year old mum picked up her award at a ceremony at JHP’s office in Coventry last week, along with £500 worth of vouchers.
Angela completed her ECDL at JHP Training in Stirling then successfully applied for a job with Prudential at its Craigforth headquarters. Since joining Prudential at the start of the year she has been promoted three times. She explains how JHP Training has helped her get her life back on track.
“Four years after having my daughter Cerys in I was still a full-time mum and, while I loved spending time with her, I thought I’d missed my chance at a career. I decided to make an appointment with the Jobcentre, and the adviser told me about the ECDL and how it could give me a recognised qualification.
“I was put in touch with JHP Training and, having arranged for Cerys to attend nursery full-time, started the course in late September. I enjoyed every minute of it, completing it in December – doing the ECDL really helped my confidence. Then my JHP tutor suggested I apply for an administration placement and after my first interview in nine years I got the job, my first in five years.
“I am now a pensions administrator and I love it. Doing the ECDL has turned my life around and I still keep in touch with people at JHP and made several friends during my training who I meet with regularly.”
Congratulations Angela, and best of luck for the future.
