The Power of NVQs

Yvonne Windsor after completing her Health and Social Care NVQWhen Yvonne Windsor joined JHP Stoke she had  decided it was the right time in her life to take stock of her career, decide on what route she wanted to take, work on increasing her opportunities and make-up for some of the time lost in her twenties in developing her career prospects.

Yvonne was working as a carer at Lyme Valley House, a local residential care home, so looked into the availability of Train to Gain programmes offered by JHP Stoke and signed-up to a Level 2 NVQ in Health and Social Care.

Yvonne sailed through the qualification which gave her the confidence to apply for a second job at the local hospital. She was successful in her application and during this time she was also promoted to Senior Carer at Lyme Valley House. Yvonne decided not to waste the opportunities she found herself presented with and signed-up for a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and is considering the possibility of training to be a nurse on completion of her Level 3 qualification.

Commenting on how the power of vocational qualifications has helped her to shape her future Yvonne said:

“Completing my NVQ has given me so much more confidence to carry out my job. It gave me a new perspective and opened up so many more options for me both in and out of Lyme Valley House.”

Yvonne’s manager at Lyme Valley House has also noticed the positive impact completing the qualification has had on Yvonne’s confidence and abilities:

“Yvonne’s training with JHP Stoke has enabled her to gain confidence which in turn led to her promotion within Lyme Valley House. Yvonne is a valuable member of the team and has approached all her training with great enthusiasm and dedication. At Lyme Valley we actively promote all NVQ training as this in turn leads to a higher category of staff within the home.”

New Opportunities for Jobcentre Plus Customers

JHP Stoke is pleased to announce that it has recently won a contract to provide basic and employability skills training to Jobcentre Plus customers, brought about following a new government initiative to help people get back to work.

The programme provides encouragement and support to all adults looking to improve their literacy, language and numeracy skills in order to find employment and JHP Stoke's friendly staff are ready to welcome newcomers to the programme.

The employability award is based on the skills, behaviours and attitudes that employers want to see in a new recruit and as such the programme is personalised to each Jobcentre Plus customer to ensure a high success rate. During the programme, learners will take part in various activities including:

  • Activities to enhance their employability skills
  • Opportunities to update their knowledge and understanding of the local job market
  • Opportunities to update their job search skills, to take part in job interviews and spend trial placements with local employers
  • Literacy, language and numeracy programmes personalised to their individual needs
  • Progress reports every three weeks to ensure they are getting the most from the programme

All of the training offered by JHP Stoke is nationally recognised and will put learners in a better position to find a job they enjoy.

Hard-working Young Apprentices Receive Awards From Radio 1 DJs

Two Apprentices from JHP Stoke have been honoured for their hard work, innovation and perseverance at the third annual Staffordshire Apprenticeship awards. The awards were organised by the Staffordshire Providers Association (SAP) and were held at the Moat House hotel in Festival Park. The ceremony recognised young people aged between 14 and 24 who have excelled after taking on an Apprenticeship.

More than 100 youngsters entered the awards and two JHP Stoke Apprentices were short-listed. Unfortunately, neither came away the overall winner but they were both highly commended – Mark Darlington in the Apprenticeship Award category and Rebecca Ball in the Personal Achievement category.

BBC Radio 1 duo, Chappers and Comedy Dave were on hand to present the awards and after the ceremony they also played a DJ set as the post-ceremony party got into full swing.

Comedy Dave said: "It has been a fantastic evening and everybody has done really well – it has been a privilege for myself and Chappers to be here".
